- Jeremiah 40:1-6

- Jeremiah 40:7-12
- Gedaliah put in charge of the land, men, women and children: the poorest of the land not exiled to Babylon
- Ishmael so of Nethaniah: a decedent of King David
- v 9: Those who remained in the land, poorest.
- Stay in The Land
- Serve the king of Babylon
- v 10: Gedaliah will be their intermediary, local G-man appointment by Babylon
- Go gather and harvest.
- v 11-12: Jewish people who fled before Babylon actually took over Jerusalem are coming back to see Gedaliah.
- Jeremiah 40:13– 41:3
- Johanan (a member of Jewish forces who survived Babylonian conquest):
- tells Gedaliah there is a plot to have him murdered.
- Ishmael, a servant of Zedekiah, from Ammon has been instructed to murder Gedaliah.
- Gedaliah tells Johanan that he is lying.
- In the seventh month
- Ishmael and ten mend murdered Gedaliah and all the Jews where were with him.
- Gedaliah should have listened to Johanan, but probably felt he had to trust Ishmael because he had been a servant of Zedekiah.

- Ishmael ambushed 70 of 80 men who were returning from Shechem, Shiloh and Samaria (all the Northern Kingdom).

- The remaining leaders and people go to Jeremiah
- “Jeremiah please pray to YOUR G_D for us.”
- Jeremiah, “I will pray to YOUR G_D…”
- People, “We will listen to YOUR G_D and do whatever He says…”
