1. Vision – Strong and clear. They can see in to the future. George Washington saw a new nation independent of Great Britain’s rule. Abraham Lincoln saw 1 nation, not 2. Kennedy saw us on the moon before we went to go. Reagan saw a world without the communism. Martin Luther King saw an America we were not judged by the color of our skin, but by our character. Churchill saw a world free of Nazi oppression. Walt Disney had a vision of a place where children and parents could have fun together. These leaders relentlessly drive to their visions completion.
2. Communication (leadership gravitates to the one who can talk). That’s generally who we elect to office. Who gets the CEO or the head coaching job? Higher a speech coach. Great communicators have one thing in common. They are all great story tellers. Become a great story teller. We just can’t get enough of stories.
3. People Skills – they have a heart for people. They care about people. They care. They love people. Jesus was very busy the last year of his life and especially the last 3 months of His life, when approached by people who were hurting he always had time to listen to them and help them. While a manager gets, the job done, great leaders tap into the emotions of their employees.
4. Character – you can’t lead without character. Qualities of character leaders: They tell the truth–all the time. Not finger pointers. They take responsibility. West Point, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy all kick you out if you violate this rule. Humility, they have a humble spirit. Billy Graham’s daughter said, “My daddy knows who he is. A farm boy from Charlotte.” One of the biggest producers in our Naples office unloads the dishwasher each morning.
5. Competence. Leaders are good at what they do. They feel compelled to do this. Good at solving problems. Colin Powell said when soldiers stop bringing you their problems you’re done. Great teachers. Become lifelong learner. Hang with the smartest people you can find. They have already been down that road. Follow their advice. Become a lifelong reader. Put down the screen on your phone, look away from screen on your desk and television. Read 1 hour every day from a book. Not the same book. You’ll read a book a week. Average man completing high school will not read another book. 82% of all books are sold to women.
6. Boldness. When it’s time to make a decision, they do it and don’t look back. They don’t should uh, would uh, could uh. They decide and move on.
7. Serving heart mentality. It’s not about advancing my career goals, it’s about yours. Want to go big time? Serve others. When that mentality hits, things happen big time. Stand close by to help, assist and edify.

The Challenge for Fathers is to grow as his children grow.
The ceil of which we build should be the floor which our children stand.
